7th Grade English Language Arts
Ms. Pohlig
Expectations:
These expectations will enable us to have a stress-free enjoyable classroom. Because you are my students, I have high expectations of and for you! I live by Shakespeare's motto: "With great power comes great responsibility."
Novels:
Reading is extremely important. Students are expected to read 2-4 novels per month. The novels can be obtained from the school library, classroom library or on your own.
We will be visiting the Southwest Middle School Library regularly. In addition, the students are more than welcome to check out a novel from the classroom library. Please check with me first if you want to borrow a book from me.
Textbooks:
Textbooks will not be issued; all work that incorporates our textbook will be completed in class. Any homework will be given either online or as a paper copy.
Writing
You will be expected to create and maintain a composition notebook (what I call a daybook) for daily warm ups. Unless you are completing a grammar exercise for warm up, you will be expected to write at least 5-7 sentences in every paragraph for your warm up prompt. You will be assigned at least 1 in-depth journal entry per week due to the fact that we are concentrating on creating insightful and detailed construct responses. These in-depth entries will be every Friday during what is called "Freewrite Friday."
Vocabulary
You will receive a vocabulary list every week. The words will be coming from Southwest Middle School's subscription to Flocabulary.com, an engaging and challenging educational resource that creates vocabulary lists and activities based on Common Core State Standards. Additionally, at times we will construct vocabulary lists from the texts that we are reading in class. We will also cover Latin root words and grade level academic vocabulary.
Grammar
Our grammar program will consist of grammar exercises 2-3x per week to ensure thorough understanding and success of the English language. I may assign short grammar exercises for homework occasionally. You are expected to ALWAYS write with proper grammar and spelling.
Interactive Notebook
You should have a three ring binder, which will consist of handouts and any project material we are working on.
You will use your daybook for daily notes and exercises. Your daybook always stays in the classroom.
Please bring your binder every single day and keep it neatly organized. I will check your binders periodically for neatness and organization. Again, if you STAY organized, you do not have to GET organized!
Homework:
Homework, while not assigned every day, is given to review the day’s lesson, help you study for vocabulary tests, or encourage you to complete assigned readings. You are expected and encouraged to write your homework assignments in your interactive notebook daily. Homework is placed on the right side of your desk when you come in to class. Late homework is accepted, but frowned upon. Late work is an automatic 59 which is an F.
Grading Scale:
A 100-90
B 89-80
C 79-70
D 69-60
F 59 and below
